You can sing along, lip sync and dance side-by-side with your idol to the tune of “I Wash It That Way,” a creative spin of a Backstreet Boys hit, which mixes pop music with information to educate the public about the threat of #HANGINfection or airborne germs that may cause skin reactions and respiratory sickness.

A word play on hangin, which means air in Filipino, and infection, #HANGINfection refers to airborne germs that may cause skin reactions and respiratory sickness. These may not be visible with the naked eye, but #HANGINfection is all around. Since it also comes from living organisms, these tiny airborne particles are most prevalent in areas with many people and animals, including damp locations!

Notable personalities like Camille Prats, Danica Sotto-Pingris, Rodjun Cruz, Donnalyn Bartolome, Pauleen Luna, Derrick Monasterio, and Richard Juan joined the #HANGININfection movement and uploaded their own versions of the music video on their social media accounts. Did you know that germs can touch you, even if you don’t touch them?

Safeguard HANGINfection 2

Alden Richards teaches kids and families about the germs present in the air, may it be from smoke, dust, or from another person’s sneeze.

We all know that germs can be passed through person-to-person contact or touching dirty objects. What many of us don’t know is that germs live in the air, too. If you believe that not touching anything or anyone can keep germs at bay, you better think again.

“#HANGINfection, technically known as Bioaerosols, refers to airborne germs such as bacteria, fungi and viruses that may cause skin reactions and respiratory sickness. Bioaerosols can come from a variety of sources, including soil, organic debris, humidifiers, air conditioners, and even farming and industrial pollution. The human body is also a source of bioaerosols: Shed human skin, coughing and sneezing can all contribute to airborne germs. These can make you sick in unexpected ways. For example, when you sneeze, most of the germs are transmitted at close range, but you need not be close to fall sick, as the smallest particles stay airborne and can travel as far as 20 meters.” says Dr. Pierangeli Vital, Ph.D. Biology (Microbioliogy), University of the Philippines Diliman.

Good thing, Safeguard, Philippine’s Number 1 Family Skin Germ Protection Soap, partners with Pambansang Bae Alden Richards to spread the word about #HANGINfection and how to fight it. The fun part? They didn’t just make it informative. They also made it fun and nostalgic!

Safeguard HANGINfection 4

The Pambasang Bae reminds everyone, that for #HANGINfection, Safeguard ang protection!

The “I Wash It That Way” music video gives a Backstreet Boys hit song a fresh spin to uncover the truth behind #HANGINfection. As told in the music video, #HANGINfection can reach us, including our children, even if we’re not touching anything or anyone. In short, we don’t just touch germs. They touch us, too!

“We know airborne germs are present in outdoor and indoor locations, and only Safeguard provides long lasting protection versus other soaps in the market,” says Ronaldo Puno, President of The Philippine Association of Medical Technologists, Inc. (PAMET).

For more than 50 years now, Safeguard has been providing Filipinos their first line of defense against germs, inhibiting the growth of disease-causing germs up to 24 hours after washing.

5 tips for a sweeter Valentine’s season

Who said that the season of love is exclusive to romantic couples?

Let’s change the game this year. After all, we learned how to love at home with family and friends. This Valentine’s Day, there’s no better way to celebrate love than to give love to people close to our hearts and even to strangers.

Spread positive vibes in ways you’ve never tried before! Here are simple yet meaningful ideas to share the love just in time for the sweetest season!

1. Bake cupcakes for bae instead of buying flowers and chocolates

Dark chocolates and red roses are so overrated. This time, be different and bake cupcakes for your loved one. Don’t know how? No problem. The Internet has tons of baking recipes for first-timers. Believe us, whether you perfect it or not, your bae would be so “kilig” with those cupcakes you baked from your heart.

2. Treat mom and dad to a relaxing massage and salon service

The ultimate superheroes in your life deserve a break from all the headaches you may give them. Give mom a new haircut and treat dad to a foot spa. Spoil them further with a relaxing full body massage to cap it off.

3. Call the nearest charity institution to ask how you can help`

Love grows in the family, so it makes sense to share it as one. Join outreach programs with the whole family (or even your friends!) to extend the love at home to those who need it the most. It’s a different yet meaningful kind of bonding experience.
In the same way, donate your excess essentials to less fortunate individuals. This is a perfect way to give back and share the love this season, even to strangers!

4. Create new memories with a spontaneous trip

It’s a fact– the most hard-to- forget memories are created on the spur of the moment. So skip planning
and pack your bags! It’s time to unleash the adventurous spirit in you! Take a random trip with bae, friends or family. Drive to a place you have always wanted to explore. Or, book a flight to the destination you have never been. Celebrate love with adventure.

5. Practice proper hygiene habits (aka. don’t cause the spread of germs!)

Yes, you’ve read it right. Spreading love can be also lead to spreading germs. Avoid this by simply practicing proper hygiene and washing your hands regularly.
Love is in the air, and so are germs! When you touch, hug or kiss your loved ones, there’s a big chance that you are spreading germs that could cause sickness.

Here’s an alarming fact from the first Philippines Handwashing Index (PHI); 7 out of 10 Filipinos say that they wash their hands after using the toilet but in reality, only 2 out of 10 really do. PHI is a breakthrough study recently commissioned by Safeguard.

PHI Findings

Keeping your loved ones safe from germs is a healthy way of showing how much you care. When you express your affection, be sure that you are spreading love and not germs. Wash your hands with Safeguard and water to keep it clean.

New Handwashing Music Video of Alden Richards Sets the Tune for a worry-free Christmas

New Handwashing Music Video of Alden Richards Sets the Tune for a worry-free Christmas

‘Tis the season to be jolly and worry-free; as Safeguard, the nation’s leading soap that stands for germ-protection; sets the tune for a healthy Christmas celebration with the newest hand-washing music video, “Five Hugas ng Krismas.”

Featuring the charming voice of local celebrity and “Pambansang Bae” Alden Richards, the music video stresses the importance of having clean hands this Yuletide season through a colorful and energetic finger-tutting choreography set to a classic Christmas melody. This is Safeguard’s creative response to an alarming discovery from the first Philippine Handwashing Index (PHI), with results showing that most Filipinos do not wash their hands regularly and diligently. PHI is a breakthrough study commissioned by Safeguard to have a closer look at the hand-washing habits of Filipinos.

SFG Alden

The message of the music video is simple yet impactful: “Ang bawat hugas, dapat Safeguard hugas”. This means only trusting the best when it comes to germ-protection, by simply following these five non-negotiables on when to wash your hands: before mag-mano, after banyo, before kumain, after playing, and before mag-bonding.

“A joyful Christmas is a Christmas that is spent with family and friends – happy and worry-free. A lot of us take hand-washing for granted, and since is it a good way to prevent illnesses, it’s important to remind the people to continuously wash their hands the Safeguard way,” says Alden Richards.

Director Sid Maderazo and Assistant Director Manman Angsico, a veteran theater actor and vocal coach, are the masterminds behind the creative execution of the “Five Hugas ng Krismas” music video. In it, the finger-tutting choreography features five hands that represent the five points of the star – reminiscent of the Filipino Christmas parol. For the background, sliding panels and creative props help depict the different times one should remember to wash their hands, specifically during those festive moments that define a Filipino Christmas. From bonding with the family over karaoke, to digging in on the delicious spread of local rice cakes, the music video is a fun and creative way to create awareness about the value of hand-washing.

“Sometimes the simplest of ideas can be the most challenging. The intention was to shoot the scenes seamlessly with live moving backgrounds. The easy route was to use green screen, but where’s the fun in that? It was all about great team work from everyone involved, and in the goal of sharing about an advocacy worth sharing to kids and the young-at-heart alike,” shares Director Sid Maderazo.

Clean hands for every Filipino

Through the Five Hugas ng Krismas music video, Safeguard aims to address the serious problem with the poor hand-washing habits of Filipinos, which was uncovered by the first Philippine Handwashing Index. The study found that seven out of ten Filipinos claim to wash their hands with soap after using a public toilet, but only two really do. To add, only water is being used when hand-washing by 60% of women before cooking, and 40% of women before feeding their kids

Children are the most prone to sickness, yet 66% of Filipinos have noticed or witnessed children not washing hands after using the toilet; and 40% of Filipinos do not wash their hands before touching young children.

“The results of the Philippine Handwashing Index prompted Safeguard to come up with a creative solution to keep hand-washing a top-of-mind habit in every home. Through “Five Hugas ng Krismas”, we want to work together to instill proper hand-washing habits in time of the holiday season, where Filipinos touch and and are in frequent contact with relatives and friends,” explains Jia Salindong-Du, Safeguard Philippines Brand Manager.

For over five decades, Safeguard has been a dedicated hand-washing advocate, promoting proper hand-washing habits with a wide range of antibacterial soaps that provide family protection against germs for up to 24 hours.

Alden Richards spreads the love (not the germs) through a new song

Alden Richards spreads the love (not the germs) through a new song
Safeguard and the Pambansang Bae team up to remind Filipino to wash their hands

In this year’s Global Handwashing Day celebration, Safeguard has partnered with one of the most prominent personalities in the country today to bring attention to the importance of proper and habitual handwashing. The nation’s leading soap together with the “Pambasang Bae” Alden Richards join forces to educate Filipinos on the importance of handwashing through the power of a song.

Alden himself sang the handwashing song and invites every Filipino to make it a habit to unfailingly wash their hands with Safeguard in these 5 “hugas non-negotiables” — before “mano”, after using the toilet, before eating, after playing and before bonding. And more importantly, to spread the love and not the germs this holiday season.

If you’ve ever wondered the kind of impact personal hygiene really makes on the spread of germs and general health of the public, consider these sobering statistics gathered from the first Philippines Handwashing Index, a breakthrough study recently commissioned by the nation’s leading soap brand, Safeguard.

It has been discovered that Filipinos touch more than 23 other people per day, summing up to more than 90 ‘touches’ a day on average. However, they wash our hands only 5 times a day! There are other shocking findings that show opportunities for improvement on handwashing habits particular on specific occasions:
After using the toilet:
• 7 out of 10 Filipinos CLAIM to wash their hands after using the toilet but—ONLY 2 out of 10 really do.
• A shocking 64% of Filipinas DO NOT wash their hands at all after using a mall toilet.

Before eating and cooking
• It was observed that 60% of females washed their hands with water ONLY before cooking.
• Before feeding the kids, 40% washed their hands with water ONLY.

Before and after bonding:
o 80% of Filipinos DO NOT wash their hands after shaking hands with another person
o 40% of Filipinos DO NOT wash their hands before touching young children

After playing or travelling
o 49% DO NOT wash their hands after using their mobile phones
o 50% DO NOT wash their hands after traveling on public transportation

safeguard informatic_100917-01

If these statistics seem particularly innocuous, keep in mind that one of the fastest ways to spread germs and diseases is by human contact and ingesting contaminated food. Clearly, Filipinos haven’t nurtured the habit of proper hand washing, and based on statistics, a great number do not care. There’s a great opportunity to educate citizens that washing hands with soap can effectively remove disease-causing germs and is the most basic way to prevent oneself from getting sick.

Did you know that 1.5 million children around the world die every year due to diarrhea? As shocking as it may seem, diarrhea is the second most common cause of death among kids. UNICEF has declared that pneumonia takes the lives 1.8 million children globally each year. Furthermore, in a study done by DOH locally, it has been found out that pneumonia is the number one cause of death among Filipino children of age 1-14 years. Believe it or not, the simple habit of proper handwashing with an anti-bacterial soap can be an effective way of reducing these incidents.

Bawat hugas, dapat Safeguard hugas

With the arrival of the ber months, these facts will become even more worrisome. The holidays mean more frequent gatherings with friends and family—and with it, the chances of you spreading germs to others increase.

“The results of the Philippine Handwashing Index indicate that Filipinos clearly haven’t nurtured the habit of proper handwashing. Which is why, Safeguard continues to take active steps to spread awareness on its relevance specifically through the Global Handwashing Day and through the new handwashing song with Alden Richards,” explains Jia Salindong- Du, Safeguard Philippines Brand Manager.

Ultimately, this is a call for every Filipino to do their part in promoting handwashing to keep everyone healthy and protected from germs throughout this season. Make it a habit to wash your hands with Safeguard in these 5 “hugas non-negotiables” — before “mano”, after using the toilet, before eating, after playing and before bonding.
