On July 19, Acts of Kindness and Solaire Resorts and Casino unveiled, “A Celebration of Smiles: Creating smiles and second chances at life through art,” an art exhibit benefiting Smile Train, the world’s leading cleft charity. The exhibit is being held at Solaire’s The Shoppes Artway.

The exhibit features artwork by local and international artists, and some of Smile Train’s former cleft patients. The artwork will be available for sale until September 2 and will help raise funds and awareness for children with clefts in the Philippines.

“We are grateful that Acts of Kindness is hosting this art exhibit to help raise awareness for Smile Train and our local programs here in the Philippines. Through this initiative, not only is Acts of Kindness able to showcase local and international talent, they are also able to help create a brighter future for children born with clefts,” said Kimmy Coseteng-Flaviano, Area Director for Smile Train in Southeast Asia.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Smile Train to help fund various local programs to provide free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care for Filipinos.

Artworks by Mr. Roberto Sanchez.

The art exhibit showcases pieces from Roberto Sanchez, a DJ and entrepreneur by trade, but creatively a self-taught artist. Sanchez works are primarily expressionistic, dramatic portraits replete with distorted, thick lines and incongruous forming gnarly surfaces of painted faces.

This artist duly approaches his paintings with a process that aims to capture the essence of the portrait subjects. While he technically addresses physicality and form, he is keenly interested to understand and capture in his canvas real presences from his subjects.

Mr. Roberto Sanchez himself.

He takes particular cue with the eyes which for him spells and define the character of the subjects. And even if the frames are still unfinished, they already evoke such entrancing stillness, energies, and completeness. They have the ability to charm and confuse.

Sanchez finds affirmation when his painted subjects find themselves in his works as they connect with their painted likeness in canvas.

Artworks by Jon Ray Fernandez.

Jon Ray Fernandez is an airline professional turned mixed media artist. A self-taught visual artist, Fernandez started off with zero art education since it never occurred to him that art could possibly be a career.

Originally from Bacolod City, he left the country to travel the world. After being based in London and the Middle East for a number of years, he came back to the Philippines in 2015 with plans to continue his aviation career. Eventually, he stumbled upon the world of art and there found his true calling.

Mr. Jon Ray Fernandez himself.

As a visual artist, his main objective is to bring beauty and fun back into local art. He started posting his works on social media, gaining a fan base around the globe. With Pedro Almodovar, muse Rosie De Palma, and actress Emmanuele Beart admiring his works, this led to patrons buying his pieces.

Camy Cabral, a full-time artist with a background in design and advertising; and Albrecht Behmel, an award-winning artist and best-selling writer whose works have been shown in Paris, Beijing, New York, Moscow and London. Despite coming from different backgrounds with different styles of artwork, these artists came together to offer their pieces all for a good cause.

Apart from the seasoned artists, some of the artwork is from Smile Train’s former cleft patients including: Julia Robert Capili, Angel Ibo, Pearl Angeli Miranda, Jervy Hobo and Nickson Cabote. Having interacted with the guests, these individuals have shown how far they’ve come since their initial cleft surgery.

“We hope that we can continue to raise awareness for children with clefts in the Philippines and all over the world through these small acts of kindness,” says Flaviano. “We want to continue to spread smiles and encourage others to do the same.”

Not only that. Raix and I got the chance to watch it’s premiere. Call it luck, back-to-back. 🙂 It’s premiere was at SM Aura, IMAX Theater at Bonifacio Global City. The day of the premiere was a rainy one, in fact there was a storm. But it didn’t stop us from watching it. I decided to grab the opportunity to accept the invitation to join the premiere even if we planned to watch it together with our fam, because being invited to a Disney Pixar Movie premiere was totally wicked. Haha.

As expected it was worth the 14 years of wait. So my son and I went home and kept the excitement to ourselves so as not to spoil his sisters and daddy. We were very silent about it for about 5 days. Imagine how we did that? Especially with my very “madaldal” son. He can actually talk non-stop while watching a full movie. 😀

Then came Father’s Day. Everybody’s excited! My youngest sister even tagged along. The greatest challenge for Raix was to keep quiet while inside the cinema and not to mention what would happen next. Hahaha. And would you believe that for the first time he was not a spoiler. 😀 It was one unforgettable Fathers’ Day for our family. We can’t wait for part 3.

A couple of weeks ago, my son and I received a package from Wert Philippines. The package was very timely for the upcoming rainy season. As we unboxed it, I was only expecting to see Nutri 10 plus, but got surprised to see more of their products – Dayzinc, which comes in syrup, capsules and chewable tablet, and Alphabetic.

I was only familiar with Nutri 10 Plus, Raix got to try this almost 2 years ago and we definitely got great results from this. We have been using this alternately with other multivitamins and it sure made him “aktibo’t malakas”. You may read our review on how he got taller and smarter.

Timely that we are on our last dosage of his current Vitamin C. We immediately gave it a try. Since it’s his first time to try Dayzinc he kind of didn’t like it’s Ponkan flavor, a bit sweet and a bit sour. But as I give it to him everyday, he got used to it. Nothing beats a good vitamin C especially one with Zinc.

Did you know that ‘Kidulting’ can be a parenting style?

Gone are the days when fun is reserved only for kids.

Guess what?! Adults are now trying to recapture their childhood experiences through playing console games or visiting their favorite kid theme park or having a spontaneous night of pajama party. This trend, known as kidulting, is a way to relive the best childhood memories, to temporarily escape adult activities, and to remember the good, old days of being carefree… because who does not want to, right?

But is kidulting for single adults only? Of course not! In fact, kidulting can also be a method of parenting where adults and kids bond together in activities they can both playfully participate. Isn’t it adorable to see a whole family infusing fun in their lifestyle just to create joyful memories for their kids, and at the same time, unleash the “kid-in-me” of the parents?

Here are some kidulting ideas that are simple, accessible, and affordable but worth the try!

  • Paint and Create

Creating art together with your children is definitely a proven stress-buster while fueling the creativity of your kids. It’s hitting two birds in one stone! If you think simple patterns will bore you as an adult, try creating thematic artworks like an “under the sea” painting or a “secret garden” coloring.

  • Play the Role

Seeing your kids play as a doctor or an engineer or a lawyer inspire you to work harder to give them a better future, right? But what if you join the fun? Try to pretend as the doctor’s patient or the engineer’s client or the lawyer’s colleague. You will see how promising your kids are with their witty reasoning. Plus, you can also guide them as early as now in choosing the career they want to have someday.

  • Bake it free

Remember the times when you did “pretend play” with cooking or baking? You can actually play again with your kids or level up and teach them to bake and maybe you’ll discover the genius baker within them. You may choose recipes which your kids can also do easily and conveniently. It is also an avenue to teach them healthy-eating habits.

Bonus tips: While doing these activities, make sure you already prepared on-the-go snacks that you and your kids can munch anywhere. Of course, you don’t want to spoil the momentum of your bonding, in case your kids get hungry in the middle of your activity. So, bring Gardenia Pocket Sandwich for a pocket full of fun bonding moments! For only Php12, you are assured of an innovative, fresh and yummy goodness that is available in 4 flavors: chocolate, peanut butter, cheese, and strawberry pastillas, that your kids and kid-in-you will love!

Gardenia 7

Kidulting as a parenting style will enable your family to practice the sense of familial inclusivity for a home treasured by everybody. After all, family team work makes the dream work.

Stay tuned for my next blog about our Gardenia Workshop.   🙂

“Safeguard: Pabaon sa Buhay (Protection for Life)” Film Reveals the Secret to Norman King’s Success

When Norman King made history by becoming the first Aeta to graduate from a premier state university in the Philippines, he was the talk of the town in an instant. His story was an inspiration to many. But what could be his secret to success?

7

Safeguard Philippines reveals the story behind Norman King’s success and how he became ready to face the big world in a recent video launched. The “Safeguard: Pabaon sa Buhay” film revolves around the life lessons his mom, Warlita King, imparted to him from his younger years until his coming of age. These life lessons or “Pabaon sa Buhay” set Norman ready for the independent life.

Also known as provisions for life, “Pabaon sa Buhay” is derived from the term “baon,” which refers to the money, food or any provision that a person takes from home to set one ready for school, work, or any journey. “Baon” however does not only pertain to material things. It can be the words of wisdom, life lessons, and family values parents teach their kids at home to protect them from the uncertainties of the outside world.

For Norman, his mom’s “Pabaon sa Buhay” became his protection and guide in life to keep focused on his goals despite the struggles of leading an independent life as shown in the short film.

1

The film begins with Norman who’s about to enter a university auditorium. He is seen wearing a bahag (a native loincloth) as he slowly walks his way through the crowd. All eyes are on him, but Norman remains undisturbed and determined. As he walks, memories of the past keep flashing back. These are moments when his mom taught him valuable lessons or her “Pabaon sa Buhay.”

2

When he first questioned his ethnicity and color, his mom told him that a clean heart has more value than physical appearance. He was also taught to never be ashamed of their status. In his teenage years, his mom reminded him to be proud of his race. These lessons and more are the things Norman carried with him as he took his own journey away from home.

4

“There is a universal challenge parents face in bringing up their children, having to balance the desire to keep them close and protected with letting them go explore the world to learn by themselves. At Safeguard, we strive to help parents overcome this tension by fostering a healthy independence between parents and children. Essential to this are the ‘pabaon’ parents give their children —be it an everyday lunchbox, the life saving habit of hand washing or life lessons—which will help protect them as they explore the world on their own,” says Alex Vogler, Associate Director, Digital Transformation & Brand Communications for Procter & Gamble’s Beauty Division in Asia Pacific.

“By sharing the touching story of Norman King and the life lessons he received from his mother, we are hoping to inspire parents all around the Philippines to impart their personal ‘pabaon’ to help protect their children in life,” concludes Vogler.
Be sure that your children are always protected even outside the home. Give them the protection that lasts with your own “Pabaon sa Buhay.”

Watch the heart-warming story of Norman King and his mother Warlita on Safeguard’s Facebook and YouTube. Join the conversation and share with us your own “Pabaon sa Buhay” stories online with the hashtags #PabaonSaBuhay and #Safeguard.
