The Askable Parent: How to Talk to Your Kids about Sexuality, Love, & Relationships

There’s no place like home for value-centered sexuality education.

1 Children want parents to be their primary and most important sexuality educator. Unfortunately, most parents feel that they lack the confidence and competence to dialogue with their children about sexuality-related concerns.

2 With parents’ delay and embarrassment in discussing sex, intimacy, relationships, and other related issues, children typically seek answers from other sources like their peers and the Internet. This parenting workshop aims to:

  • Explore personal attitudes, beliefs and values about sex and sexuality;
  • Define sexuality education and debunk myths and misconceptions about it;
  • Enhance awareness about the sexual behaviors of Filipino youth and the specific challenges they face in making a healthy transition from adolescents to adults; and
  • Provide tools that will equip the modern-day fathers/mothers become Askable Parents.

1. Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) is an age-appropriate, culturally relevant approach to teaching about sexuality and relationships by providing scientifically accurate, realistic, non-judgemental information (UNESCO, UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO. 2009. International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education).

2. According to the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS, 2013), the proportion of 15-24 year-old youth who ever discussed sex at home while growing up has declined in the last 10 years from 15.4 percent in 1994 to 9.7 percent in 2013.

ABOUT COACH PAMMY

Coach Pammy

Pamela a.k.a. ‘Pammy’ Godoy is the author of the book “Sex, Virginity, and Relationships: What I Wish I Knew in College” where she shared about her story, struggles, and lessons learned as a teenage mom. This is such a timely book as twenty four (24) babies are delivered by teenage mothers every hour (according to the 2014 report of the Philippine Statistical Authority).

Given our highly sexualized environment, kids’ easy access to pornographic materials, and the persistent discomfort to discussing sexuality-related issues, Pammy Godoy is on a mission to equip parents to become their children’s primary sexuality educator. She hopes to create a movement of Askable Parents who are able to create teachable moments on love, dating, and relationships. She believes that when young people are empowered with positive values, life skills, and knowledge with regard to their wellbeing and sexuality, they can make conscious, healthy and respectful choices about their sexuality and relationships.

In her capacity as a United Nations Officer since 2008, she worked with the Department of Education (DepEd) for the inclusion of adolescent reproductive health through life skills-based education for in-school and out-of-school youth. She collaborated with the Department of Health (DOH) and World Health Organization for the development of the National Standards of Adolescent-Friendly Health Services. She worked with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Commission on Population on its programs on “Parenting Adolescents.”

Pammy has been working with the DSWD, Philippine Commission on Women and NGOs to address the issue of violence against women and children in both development context and post-disaster settings.

Prior to joining United Nations (UN), she taught Gender Studies and Women’s Studies at De La Salle University (DLSU) – Manila and St. Scholastica’s College, respectively. She created awareness among call center agents about HIV and AIDS in partnership with MTV Asia and DKT Philippines. Pammy holds a Masters degree, major in Communication and minor in Women’s Studies, from the University of the Philippines – Diliman.
